Cranberry

Case
The parents of a child with neurogenic bladder want to know if cranberry juice will help prevent urinary tract infections in their child.
Question
TRUE or FALSE?
TRUE.
Cranberry juice appears to interfere with adhesion of uropathogenic bacteria to the urinary tract walls. Clinical studies suggest that it reduces (but does not eliminate) the risk of recurrent UTI in adult women. However, studies in children with urinary tract abnormalities or who need intermittent catheterization have not demonstrated any significant reduction in UTI incidence with cranberry. Cranberry juice is extremely safe when consumed as a food in amounts of 12-24 ounces daily.
